A doctor draws amniotic fluid into a syringe from a pregnant woman. |
A doctor uses a stethoscope to test lungs of an Aboriginal woman. |
Sonography uses sound waves to probe painlessly. A piezoelectric crystal (1) converts electric pulses into vibrations that penetrate the body. These sound waves are reflected back to the crystal, which reconverts them into electric signals. A doctor places a transducer containing a crystal (2) on the abdomen of a pregnant woman. Echoes from the fetus are translated into faint signals, which are processed by a computer into a video image (3). |

Ed Kashi, Paramedics working with the Los Angeles Fire Department, assigned to station 65 in Watts, respond to 911 calls. They must deal with hospital overcrowding, ambulance diversions and provide healthcare for members of the local community. In many instances, they deliver primary care for people in the community they serve. This is due to the health insurance problems in America today, where hospitals are overcrowded and people feel they have no alternative for basic health care delivery. This is one of the impacts of having 46 million Americans without health insurance. Due to the abuse of the system and a lack of education, people use the ambulances and paramedics as a taxi service to the emergency rooms of the area hospitals, which makes fifty million dollars a year for the L.A. City Fire Department but strains the system for those who really need emergency services. Woman suffering from pain and dizziness is cared for and left to go to her doctor. |
Photograph by Ed Kashi, At 81 years old, family physician Dr. Arthur Coleman continues to serve the community in San Franciscos Bayview-Hunters Point neighborhood. Dr. Coleman examines a bed-ridden patient. |
